About Anaconda
Anaconda was founded by Marcus Daly, one of the Copper Kings,
who financed the construction of a smelter on nearby Warm
Springs Creek to process copper ore from the Butte mines. In
June 1883, Daly filed for a town plat for “Copperopolis,” but
that name already graced a mining town in Meagher County.
Instead, Daly named the town for his Anaconda Mine. The Anaconda
Company expanded smelting capacity over time, and by 1919 the
Washoe Reduction Works could boast that its 585-foot (178 m)
smokestack (Anaconda Smelter Stack) was the tallest masonry
structure in the world and that the smelter-refining complex
constituted the world’s largest nonferrous processing plant. In
1980, Atlantic Richfield Company closed the smelter, bringing an
end to almost a century of mineral processing. Since then, an
operation for environmental cleanup was put into place by the
Environmental Protection Agency and executed with the assistance
of ARCO. The multi-million dollar cleanup and investment has
resulted in the formation of "Old Works" Golf Course, a
championship 18-hole course designed by Jack Nicklaus.

History of the Vagabond Motel
Ann and her
husband Paul Hawkins built the Vagabond Motel in the spring of
1961 based on a design by Mr. Hawkins, an art teacher at
Anaconda High School. The original plan included a dozen rooms
with a center hallway. Two years later they added another six
rooms to the east. The center hallway, an uncommon feature in
small motels of that era, proved a convenient feature for
customers.
During the
years that followed, ownership of the motel changed once. Ann
sold the motel to former employee Sylvia Anderson on October 27,
2005. Anderson worked as a maid and desk clerk from 1981 to 1997
and now manages the business with co-owner Roger Anderson.
The
Vagabond, as neat and trim as when it opened on Independence Day
1961, has a steady clientele that includes customers who return
year after year due to the town’s scheduled events and
activities. Those include sports tournaments, especially the
annual Wayne Estes basketball tournament and annual Goosetown
Softball Tournament, Art in Washoe Park, family reunions,
weddings and funerals. Additionally, since the Old Works golf
course arrived, the Vagabond is a key location for those golfers
to stay.
The
Vagabond continues to service many notable figures. These
figures include a governor, a United States senator and a man
knighted by the Queen of England for his work in medicine. The
motel also served as home base for a crew filming the movie
“Runaway Train” in 1985.
The
Vagabond name changed on July 1, 2009 to the Vagabond Lodge
Motel LLC.
Plans for
2009 restructuring include a new laundry room, trailer plug-ins
and 10 additional rooms.
